PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — One person was killed and three others were injured Sunday evening following a head-on crash on State Route 104 in Pickaway County.
According to Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey, the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 6:37 p.m. on September 13, 2026, reporting a head-on collision involving two vehicles on State Route 104, just north of State Route 316.
The South Bloomfield Police Department was the first agency to arrive, with Pickaway County Sheriff’s deputies arriving shortly afterward. The crash occurred near 12534 State Route 104, just north of Walker Road.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found a head-on collision involving a 2017 red Chevrolet Trax and a 2024 blue GMC truck. The Chevrolet was smoking, and occupants were unable to exit the vehicle without assistance. The driver of the GMC was able to get out of the vehicle on their own.
According to the Sheriff’s Office investigation and witness statements, the Chevrolet Trax was traveling southbound in the northbound lane when it approached the GMC truck, which was traveling northbound in the northbound lane.
The GMC driver swerved into the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid the collision. The Chevrolet then reportedly swerved back toward the southbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to assist with the crash investigation.
Firefighters and EMS personnel extricated the driver and two passengers from the Chevrolet Trax. The driver was identified as 47-year-old Basil A. Southern of Columbus. The two passengers were identified as Anna M. Southern and Stephanie A. Foster, both also of Columbus.
Scioto Township Fire and EMS transported the occupants to hospitals in the Columbus area. Harrison Township Fire and EMS pronounced Southern deceased at the scene.
The driver of the GMC, identified as Amanda J. Howard, was transported to a local hospital by Circleville Fire and EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
