ASVILLE / GROVE CITY, Ohio — While most high school seniors spend their summer vacations relaxing, 17-year-old Cary Brown is spending his swimming miles, cycling county roads, and running marathons.
The incoming Grove City High School senior—who splits his time living with his father in Ashville—has set his sights on an elite athletic milestone: competing in Ironman Maryland on September 21, 2026. The grueling race takes place just 11 days after he turns 18, putting him in a position to become one of the youngest solo finishers in the history of the global endurance franchise.

An Ironman triathlon is widely considered one of the most brutal single-day sporting events in the world, requiring participants to conquer a 2.4-mile open-water swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a full 26.2-mile running marathon, completely back-to-back.
A Foundation Built on the Wrestling Mat
For Brown, pushing past normal physical limits is already second nature. He is a standout varsity wrestler at Grove City High School, earning First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) honors. He credits the grueling sport for giving him the psychological edge needed to train for a triathlon.
“Wrestling has taught me discipline, resilience, mental toughness, and the value of embracing difficult challenges. I want to show people, especially young athletes, that everyone can do hard things. If you’re willing to work hard, stay disciplined, and keep going when things get difficult, you can accomplish goals that seem impossible.” — Cary Brown
Brown’s endurance resume is already remarkably dense for a teenager. He completed his first full marathon last summer, followed by a second full marathon just one month later. To date, he has also completed five half-marathons, all while maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
Looking beyond his high school graduation, Brown plans to turn his passion for physical endurance and community dedication into a career as a professional firefighter.
The Push for $5,000 in Community Sponsorships
With months of intense physical preparation already underway, Brown faces an entirely different hurdle: funding the massive financial footprint of an Ironman campaign.
He has launched a local community outreach initiative with a sponsorship goal of $5,000 to help offset the steep costs associated with the event, which include formal race registration fees, specialized technical training equipment, strict athletic nutrition, travel, and race-week lodging in Maryland.
Brown is appealing to local families, community members, and businesses in both the Grove City and Ashville areas for backing. In exchange for sponsorship support, he plans to feature his donors across his social media platforms and proudly display sponsor names and business logos on a custom, high-visibility T-shirt that he will wear throughout race week in Maryland.
