BAINBRIDGE, Ohio — A tense standoff on Free Lane ended peacefully Monday morning after a shooting suspect surrendered to Ross County sheriff’s deputies following a reported barricade situation.
Phillip Dragston Jr. faces charges of felonious assault after allegedly shooting and seriously harming a victim on June 8, 2026.
According to sheriff’s office reports, Deputy Nott responded to the 1000 block of Free Lane in Bainbridge at approximately 11:57 a.m. while additional deputies were already on the scene, establishing a command post amid reports that the suspect had barricaded himself inside his home.
A High-Stakes Surrender
As backup units approached the immediate scene, shouting could be heard as deputies began issuing tactical commands to the home. Dragston emerged from the residence shortly after and surrendered to law enforcement without further incident.
Following Dragston’s arrest, a search of his person yielded a wallet, a set of keys, and a tape recorder. Authorities noted that Dragston claimed the recording device contained active “evidence” related to the incident. He was immediately secured in the rear of a patrol vehicle.
Clearing the Scene
With the suspect in custody, deputies turned their attention to the neighboring property to check on the welfare of the victim and ensure no other threats remained.
“I then proceeded up to a camper on the neighboring property in order to clear it, as this is where the victim lives,” Deputy Nott noted in the official narrative.
Upon approaching the camper, deputies heard a voice from inside. Officers ordered the occupant to show his hands before safely executing a sweep of the trailer. Units also cleared an outbuilding on the property that had been discovered with an open door; however, no other individuals were found inside.
Investigation Continues
Once the perimeter was deemed secure, Detective Davidson arrived on the scene to read Dragston his Miranda rights and conduct an initial roadside interview inside the cruiser.
The victim suffered serious physical harm in the attack, though an update on their current medical status has not been publicly released. The case remains under active investigation by the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.
