CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — A multi-vehicle crash at a busy Circleville intersection claimed the life of a local woman on Thursday afternoon, May 28.

The four-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 1:38 p.m. at the intersection of US-23 and Circle Lane, according to a media release from the Circleville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Chain-Reaction Collision at the Intersection

State troopers report that Marilyn Gregg was operating a 2017 Hyundai Tucson northbound on US-23 and had stopped in the left-turn lane, waiting to turn onto Circle Lane.

As Gregg attempted to make the left turn, her vehicle failed to yield and was struck by a southbound 2018 Toyota Corolla, driven by Sara Gearhart, which was traveling in the left lane of US-23.

The initial impact sent the Tucson directly into the path of a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Brant Culler, which was traveling southbound in the right lane. The Silverado struck the Tucson a second time, pushing the compact SUV until it finally came to rest in a roadside ditch.

Debris from the violent chain-reaction collision flew across the intersection and struck a 2020 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Emily Lyons, who was stopped at the traffic light waiting to travel eastbound on Circle Lane.

Driver Succumbs to Injuries

Gregg was the only occupant injured in the crash. Emergency medical personnel rushed her to nearby OhioHealth Berger Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently flown via medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she was later pronounced deceased.

The drivers of the other three vehicles involved did not require immediate hospitalization.

Active Investigation Underway

The intersection was heavily disrupted for a significant portion of the afternoon as emergency crews worked to treat the injured, clear the wreckage, and document the scene. The Circleville Post of the OSHP was assisted at the scene by the Pickaway Township Fire Department, Circleville Fire Department, and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

State troopers confirmed that the fatal crash remains under active investigation.
