ROCKBRIDGE, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a fatal incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon in a rugged section of Hocking Hills State Park.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), park officers responded to a report of a fatal fall at Cantwell Cliffs just after 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Details regarding what led to the incident, as well as the identity of the individual involved, have not yet been released as the investigation continues.

A Beautiful but Treacherous Terrain

Located in the northernmost region of Hocking Hills State Park, Cantwell Cliffs is highly regarded for its deep valleys, steep sandstone cliffs, and dramatic rock shelters. However, it is also known as one of the park’s most physically demanding locations.

ODNR officially classifies the Cantwell Cliffs hiking trail as “difficult.” While tourism sites highlight the area’s breathtaking, remote beauty, hikers are frequently warned about the trail’s natural hazards:

  • Severe Erosion: Ongoing geological erosion has created sheer, unguarded drop-offs along the gorge.
  • Strenuous Climbs: The trail features steep, narrow stone stairways and sharp elevation changes that can become slippery.

Park Safety Reminders

Following the tragedy, officials are reiterating strict park safety protocols. ODNR urges all visitors to Hocking Hills State Park to remain on marked, designated trails at all times. Staying on the trail is critical, as the terrain off-trail can feature unstable ground and hidden drop-offs.

Hikers are also reminded to wear appropriate footwear with strong traction, closely supervise children, and exercise extreme caution when navigating wet or uneven trail conditions.
