McARTHUR, OH — Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) traveled to Vinton County to officially celebrate the state’s thriving inland fishing industry, highlighting the region’s vast outdoor recreation opportunities.

This year’s annual Governor’s Inland Fish Ohio Day was hosted at the scenic Lake Hope State Park, a 120-acre hidden gem nestled within the heavily forested terrain of Vinton County. The event emphasizes the state’s rich angling traditions and the economic power of rural Ohio tourism.

DeWine Champions Ohio’s Outdoor Traditions

During his visit to Vinton County, Governor DeWine emphasized how essential destinations like Lake Hope are to the state’s heritage, conservation funding, and family life.

“Inland Fish Ohio is a great opportunity to celebrate Ohio’s incredible fishing traditions and natural wonders like Lake Hope State Park,” said Governor DeWine. “Fishing brings families and friends together, supports conservation efforts, and helps Ohioans connect to the outdoors.”

Boasting 5.7 miles of picturesque shoreline and a convenient boat launch right off State Route 278, Lake Hope restricts watercraft to canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and electric motors, making it a highly sought-after, tranquil location for local and traveling anglers alike.

A Massive Boost for the Vinton County Economy

Governor DeWine’s focus on Vinton County comes as wildlife and tourism officials underscore the staggering economic impact of the sport. According to data released by the Wildlife Management Institute, anglers generated a massive $5.5 billion in economic spending across Ohio in 2022.

When anglers travel to inland waters like those in Vinton County, their spending on lodging, bait, dining, and fuel directly stimulates local businesses and supports rural economies. Research indicates that roughly 18% of Ohio’s adult population—about 1.7 million individuals—participate in fishing, with 827,000 holding active state fishing licenses.

World-Class Stocking Efforts

ODNR officials credited state-backed conservation programs for keeping lakes like Lake Hope primed for visitors. The Division of Wildlife stocked a staggering 36 million fish across public waters, ponds, and streams, introducing 11 different species to 233 locations statewide.

“One of the great reasons for fishing in Ohio is the many locations to pursue your favorite fish species,” noted ODNR Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker. “That includes Lake Hope, where anglers can find good populations of largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill.”

Anglers casting a line in Vinton County have an excellent chance of landing largemouth bass, sunfish (bluegill), and channel catfish that qualify for the coveted “Fish Ohio” trophy status.

The successful Governor’s Inland Fish Ohio Day event was seamlessly coordinated through a joint effort between ODNR’s Division of Wildlife and the Division of Parks and Watercraft.
