JACKSTOWN, Ohio (March 2, 2026) — The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 5 is inviting local students to showcase their creativity as part of its annual Paint-the-Plow contest — and this year comes with a patriotic twist.
The 2026 theme, “America’s 250th Birthday Celebration Edition,” encourages participants to design artwork honoring the nation’s milestones, service and innovation ahead of the United States’ semiquincentennial celebration.
The program is open to all K-12 schools, career-technical schools and youth organizations within District 5’s seven-county region, including Coshocton, Fairfield, Guernsey, Knox, Licking, Muskingum and Perry counties. Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 27.
Paint-the-Plow is a community outreach initiative that allows students to create original artwork on ODOT snowplow blades. Once completed, the blades may be displayed at community events to promote winter driving safety and public awareness before being mounted on trucks and used to clear roadways during the winter season.
Key Dates:
- Application Deadline: Friday, March 27
- Plow Delivery to Schools: Week of April 6
- Plow Pickup: No later than May 15
In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, suggested design ideas include themes related to the Declaration of Independence, the historic National Road, aviation achievements and Ohio’s legacy in shaping the nation.
After the painted plows are returned, a “People’s Choice” winner will be selected through a social media contest on the Ohio Department of Transportation – East Central Ohio District 5 Facebook page. Each “like” on a plow’s photo will count as a vote.
Last year, Medill Elementary in Fairfield County earned the District 5 title through the popular vote.
Schools interested in participating can request an application by contacting the ODOT District 5 Public Information Office at [email protected] or by calling 740-323-5204.
