CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney is speaking out following the killing of Alex Pretti, calling the incident “sickening” and urging residents not to become numb in the face of violence and injustice.

In a public statement, Feeney said Pretti’s death feels deeply personal, describing him as someone who could have easily been part of the Chillicothe community.

“He feels like someone we could have known,” Feeney said. “He could have worked at our VA. He could have mountain biked at Great Seal.”

The mayor acknowledged feelings of exhaustion, frustration, and hopelessness surrounding the case, but emphasized the importance of continuing to engage rather than withdrawing.

“I feel numb, but I refuse to let the weight of it all shut me down,” Feeney said. “If this is how you feel, that is okay. But don’t become numb.”

Feeney said he has struggled with what actions individuals can take but believes doing “something” is critical. He encouraged residents to show kindness within their communities, attend protests if they choose, and engage directly with elected officials through calls or emails.

His remarks come as the U.S. Senate prepares to vote this week on legislation that includes funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Feeney noted that Ohio’s two U.S. Senators, Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted, will both participate in the vote, and that Senator Husted is on the ballot this year.

Feeney shared the message he personally sent to both senators, urging them to oppose additional ICE funding unless meaningful reforms are enacted. In the message, he stated that while he respects law enforcement and the necessity of enforcing the law, he does not support the way ICE is currently carrying out its responsibilities.

He referenced the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, calling them “shocking, tragic, and completely unacceptable,” and said such incidents undermine public trust and strain communities.

Feeney contrasted his concerns with ICE against his praise for local law enforcement, highlighting the professionalism of the Chillicothe Police Department.

“Here in Chillicothe we have an incredible police force that is well trained, hardworking, and professional,” Feeney wrote. “That is what we should expect from all law enforcement.”

The mayor encouraged residents who share his concerns to contact Ohio’s senators directly.
