YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio — Outdoor enthusiasts and history lovers are invited to explore one of Ohio’s most scenic natural areas during the 10th Annual Winter Hike at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve and John Bryan State Park, scheduled for Saturday, February 7.
Hosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the event is part of the America 250 celebration, marking the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. This year’s hike will feature historical reenactors, naturalist-led stations, and educational exhibits along a scenic 3-mile route through the Clifton Gorge region.
The self-paced hike will begin at the John Bryan State Park Day Lodge, located on State Route 370, about two miles east of Yellow Springs. Participants are encouraged to start the hike before 10:30 a.m. to ensure time to explore exhibits at the Clifton Gorge Exploration Center, which opened last June and features new botanical and geological displays.

Along the trail, visitors will encounter interpreters portraying historic figures tied to the area, including 18th-century mill operator Robert Patterson and renowned botanist Daniel Drake. Naturalists stationed throughout the route will share insights into the area’s cultural history, geology, and ecology, while hikers enjoy sweeping winter views of the Little Miami State and National Scenic River.
Participants are encouraged to stop at the Exploration Center to warm up, learn more about the gorge’s natural features, and speak with experts positioned along the gorge and rim trails.
ODNR advises hikers to dress for winter conditions, wear sturdy footwear, and bring water. Shuttle service will be available from the nature preserve back to John Bryan State Park until 1 p.m., with pickup located at the small parking lot on Jackson Street in Clifton.
Clifton Gorge is recognized as a National Natural Landmark, known for its dramatic rock formations and rare plant species, including hemlock trees and the uncommon snow trillium.
