SOUTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio — A routine traffic stop by the South Bloomfield Police Department on August 25, 2025, escalated into a significant drug bust and a life-threatening incident involving suspected fentanyl exposure, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement and the strength of inter-agency cooperation.
At approximately 5:00 p.m., two South Bloomfield officers conducted a traffic stop that resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of suspected narcotics and a firearm. During transport to the Pickaway County Jail, one officer was exposed to suspected fentanyl and began showing signs of an overdose. A Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant at the jail quickly recognized the symptoms and administered Narcan, a life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug.
Complicating the situation, one of the vehicle’s passengers also began overdosing during the incident. Both the officer and the passenger were rushed to Berger Hospital, where the passenger was intubated. In a dramatic turn, the passenger regained consciousness, removed his breathing tube, and fled the hospital. He was later apprehended by the Circleville Police Department.
The South Bloomfield officer was treated and released from Berger Hospital and is now recovering. The South Bloomfield Police Department expressed deep gratitude to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and the Circleville Police Department for their swift assistance.
“This incident underscores the daily risks our officers face to remove dangerous drugs and firearms from our communities,” said Chief Michael Maynard. “It also showcases the remarkable teamwork and cooperation within our law enforcement community. I am proud to stand alongside these dedicated professionals.”
The investigation into the seized narcotics and firearm is ongoing, and no further details about the suspects or charges have been released at this time. The South Bloomfield Police Department continues to work with local agencies to ensure community safety.
