COLUMBUS, Ohio – July 9, 2025 — As Ohioans flock to parks, lakes, trails, and rivers to enjoy summer’s warm weather, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is reminding everyone to prioritize safety before heading out on any outdoor adventure.

From swimming and hiking to boating and camping, ODNR encourages residents and visitors to prepare a personal safety plan, especially when participating in water-based recreation.

“Summer is a time where we see our state parks, nature preserves, forests, rivers and lakes full of people with their families, and we want everyone to have fun while staying safe,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “A safety plan is something I encourage everyone to make ahead of a day trip to the lake or a weekend in one of our state parks.”

ODNR offers several safety recommendations for outdoor activity:

  • Never go alone—bring a buddy when swimming, paddling, or hiking
  • Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on the water
  • Use designated swimming areas at state park beaches
  • Share your route and expected return time with someone
  • Avoid alcohol while boating
  • Stay hydrated and know your environment
  • Watch for trail hazards, boating speed zones, and changing weather conditions

The agency promotes safety year-round through its “Keep What Matters Afloat” campaign and other public outreach efforts like National Safe Boating Week. This spring, ODNR offered more than 35 free Ohio Boating Education Courses (OBEC) to help prepare recreational boaters.

During the recent Fourth of July weekend, Natural Resources Officers participated in “Operation Dry Water,” a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing alcohol- and drug-related incidents on waterways.

ODNR also continues to expand its life jacket loaner program, with 32 stations now available at state parks across Ohio—offering free, easy access to properly fitted life jackets for all ages.
