SWANTON, Ohio — Residents near the Toledo Express Airport may notice a significant uptick in military activity this week as the 180th Fighter Wing kicks off a large-scale Combat Readiness Inspection.

The exercise began Monday, April 20, and is scheduled to run through Sunday, April 26. The week-long drill is designed to simulate high-intensity combat scenarios to ensure the Air National Guard wing is fully prepared for real-world deployments.

What to Expect: 24-Hour Operations

Because this is a comprehensive readiness test, the base will be operating outside of its normal business hours. Neighbors and commuters should prepare for a “multi-sensory” military presence throughout the week.

Public Advisory: You may notice the following:

  • 24-Hour Flight Operations: Jet engine noise may be heard during overnight and early morning hours.
  • Simulated Combat Sounds: The use of loudspeakers, sirens, and simulated gunfire will be part of the training environment.
  • Visible Effects: Smoke and controlled fires may be visible from the base perimeter, along with increased drone activity.
  • Gate Delays: Expect increased traffic and personnel activity at security gates and along the base boundary.

The Mission: “Anytime, Anywhere”

These inspections are a standard but critical component of military life. By testing the wing’s ability to operate under pressure, the Air National Guard ensures that its airmen are trained and equipped to support U.S. National Defense Strategies at a moment’s notice.

“Readiness inspections, in addition to real-world deployments and training exercises, ensure our wings are ready to deploy anytime—anywhere,” the 180th Fighter Wing stated in a public release.

Exercise Reminders

The 180th Fighter Wing emphasizes that this is a planned exercise and not a response to any real-world threat. Residents are encouraged not to be alarmed by the presence of smoke, sirens, or increased security measures through Sunday.
