CIRCLEVILLE – Two people were hospitalized following a crash Tuesday at the traffic light in front of Taco Bell on U.S. Route 23.

Christopher Bayes, 45, of Mt. Sterling, was reportedly in the left lane at Pickaway Crossing attempting to make a left turn onto U.S. Route 23 northbound about 5:45 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to Sgt. Corey Pennington, Ohio State Highway Patrol.

As Bayes pulled out from the intersection, his Kia Sorento was struck broadside by a southbound Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Cody Wise, 20, of McArthur, who was cited for failure to stop at a red light.

Bayes had to be extricated from his vehicle by rescue crews from the Circleville and Pickaway Township fire departments. He was transported by Air Evac to The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus for treatment of what Pennington believed were non-life-threatening injuries.

Wise was transported to Berger Hospital by Circleville medics, also with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in Wise’s vehicle was not injured.

Southbound traffic on U.S. Route 23 was routed through the parking lot at Pickaway Crossing to the Goodchild Service Road until the roadway was cleared.
