Ross County & Chillicothe — Tomorrow is the second Tuesday of the month, so you must choose between history and prehistory: The Ross County Genealogical Society and the Mound City chapter of the Ohio Archaeological Society have their monthly meetings plus presentations on the evening of May 14th. From the groups’ email announcements:

A study of the use of caves in Southeast Ohio is the feature of the Mound City gathering, at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park at 16062 State Route 104 a few miles north of Chillicothe.

In the auditorium of the Mound City interpretive center, Tori Lovelace will present “A Case Study in Regional Prehistoric Rockshelter Use in Southeastern Ohio,” based upon her undergraduate thesis.

Lovelace is an Ohio native and has attended Ohio University for the past four years studying anthropology and archaeology. She has a wide range of experience including the summer 2021 OU archaeology field school.

The meeting is 6:30 to 8:45pm, and the group welcomes historical and prehistorical artifacts brought in to identify.

If you missed Lisa Uhrig’s previous “Zane’s Trace” presentation, the Ross County Genealogical Society will host her at 7pm.

Having grown up near the famous trail and road in Huntington Township, as well as being the archivist for the Ross County Historical Society, she has many insights into Ebenezer Zane’s 1797 blazed trail across the future state of Ohio.

Plenty of parking is in the rear of the Ross County Genealogical Society at 303 South Paint Street in Chillicothe. Refreshments will be served after the program.

Both groups sometimes record and archive their presentations online. The Mound City chapter of the Ohio Archaeological Society has a Facebook page and YouTube account. The Ross County Genealogical Society has a Facebook page.
