ROSS COUNTY, OH – September 3, 2025 — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious work zone crash that happened Tuesday evening in Union Township, leaving two teens injured and one driver cited.

The crash occurred around 7:49 p.m. on County Road 550, near Township Road 142, according to Sgt. Nathan Mathias of the Highway Patrol.

Investigators say 17-year-old of Frankfort was driving a 2005 Honda Civic northwest on CR 550 when he failed to maintain an assured clear distance ahead. His vehicle struck traffic barrels, then collided with a Ross County Water Department truck that was parked in the active work zone, as well as a worker directing traffic in that work zone.

The Honda then veered off the left side of the road.

The Driver and the 18-year-old County worker, of Chillicothe, were both transported by Union Township EMS to Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe with suspected minor injuries.

The Ross County Water Department vehicle, a 2007 International truck, sustained damage.

The Teen was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance (ORC 4511.21A). Alcohol and drug use were not suspected, according to the crash report.

The roadway was closed for several hours while troopers investigated and crews cleared the scene.
