#11 Harley Shaw of Huntington Schools struggles with calf #4.

Ross County Fairgrounds — The “Calf Scramble” ended Junior Fair Night with the annual muddy rough-and-tumble.

After the outhouse races, apple pie contest and auction, and lip sync contest, 16 teenage boys and girls raced and wrestled with 11 calves on the muddy racetrack at the grandstand.

The below results were supplied by the Ross County Junior Fair Board. See also the below images for Calf Scramble participants and winners.

I saw participant number 9 Grace Lawhorn injured – a calf stepped on her back around her left kidney. Lawhorn soon walked off the field, clearly in pain…but at the end, she returned to help the last participant by pushing the calf into the white circle, as you can see at the end of the video.

Apparently participant number 16, Amanda Conaway of Paint Valley (go Bearcats!), was an addition after the scramble booklet was printed. She caught calf number 9.

Participant number 5 Austin McWhorter was wearing a GoPro camera on his helmet, eliciting interest from the emcees in seeing his footage afterward.

Also hear from Ross County Junior Fair Queen Nora Beery and Second Attendant Ava Palmer in a separate story and video.
