WELLSTON — A late-night crash in Wellston left one man dead and two others injured after a car struck a golf cart early Sunday morning.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 2 a.m. on South Pennsylvania Avenue near 6th Street. Investigators said a 2014 Hyundai, driven by a juvenile, struck a registered golf cart from behind. The impact forced the golf cart off the roadway and into a tree, while the Hyundai came to rest in the street.

The golf cart was operated by 40-year-old Brant Derrow of Wellston. His passenger, 25-year-old Matthew Juniper, also of Wellston, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead after being transported to Holzer Medical Center in Jackson.

Derrow suffered serious injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia. The juvenile driver of the Hyundai received minor injuries and was treated at Holzer of Jackson.

Pennsylvania Avenue was closed for nearly six hours as investigators worked the scene. Agencies assisting included the Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit, Wellston Police and Fire Departments, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County EMS, Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Wellston City Service Director’s Office, and Five Time Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
