Barbara Jean Thomas

Barbara Jean Thomas, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at Scioto Community, where she was known as the “unofficial Mayor” and “Postmaster General.”

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Salvatore Thomas Sr.; parents, William and Mary Chrystine Carrington; and granddaughter, Christina.

Barbara is survived by her children, Salvatore (Joanie) Thomas Jr., Maureen (Shawn) Koehring, Christopher David (Madeline) Thomas and Patrick Anthony (Kristine) Thomas; grandchildren, Shawn, Nicole, Angela, Stephanie, Brawner and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Jorge, Ellie, Leeanna and Madison; adopted daughter, Lisa (Vernon) Zeigler; and many friends.

She was a member of the Women’s Army Corp and met her husband at Ft. Sam Houston. She worked for Mt. Carmel Medical Center as a surgical nurse.

Barbara loved to ride her scooter around Scioto Community and talk with the residents, and she was a big presence. She was also a member of the Scioto Winers, her Wii bowling league team, and enjoyed the arts and crafts time.

A Christian burial prayer service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel at St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High St., Columbus, with Deacon Jerry Butts, Celebrant. Inurnment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Rd., Columbus, OH 43215.
