COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio’s mineral industries generated an impressive $1.7 billion in 2024, according to a new report released by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The total marks the 11th consecutive year that the state’s industrial minerals sector has surpassed the $1 billion mark in production value.

The findings come from the 2024 Report on Ohio Mineral Industries: An Annual Summary of the State’s Economic Geology, compiled by ODNR’s Division of Geological Survey. The report details production totals, economic impact, and employment trends across the state’s mineral sectors — including commodities like sand, gravel, limestone, shale, and salt.

“While mineral production saw a modest decline in 2024, the increased output of shale, as well as sand and gravel, highlights the sector’s adaptability and importance to key infrastructure and construction markets,” said D. Mark Jones, Division Chief and State Geologist. “More significantly, the value of these commodities continues to rise faster than their production, reflecting increased demand and positioning the industry for continued growth.”

Key Highlights from the 2024 Report

  • Ohio’s mineral industries sold approximately $150 worth of resources per resident.
  • Shale production increased by 28.5%, with 118,659 more tons produced compared to 2023.
  • Production declined for several materials, including clay, salt, coal, sandstone, limestone, dolomite, and peat.
  • Sales values rose for limestone and dolomite, sand and gravel, and salt, showing strong market demand despite reduced output.

The ODNR’s Division of Geological Survey oversees responsible mineral extraction statewide, maintaining detailed records of mining operations and enforcing regulations to protect Ohio’s natural environment.

The annual mineral industries report serves as an important resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals, offering data on mine locations, geological formations, production statistics, and company reports.
