New Heritage of Freedom Trail offers immersive experience in history and nature

GALENA, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) celebrated a milestone today with the ribbon-cutting of the first-ever Heritage of Freedom Trail, a new outdoor attraction at Alum Creek State Park. This trail commemorates Ohio’s crucial role in the Underground Railroad and the journey of freedom seekers in the 19th century.

“Ohio played a pivotal role in the path of the Underground Railroad, guiding many enslaved individuals to freedom,” said Governor Mike DeWine during the opening ceremony. “With the launch of Ohio’s first Heritage of Freedom Trail, we preserve this important chapter of history, offering future generations an opportunity to connect with the past through nature.”

The Heritage of Freedom Trail is located near the Galena Boat Ramp at Alum Creek State Park. The nearly three-quarter-mile natural surface loop invites visitors to explore the park while learning about the area’s history and the lives of those who sought freedom through Ohio. Informative signage along the trail highlights key historical sites, including the 19th-century African American community of Africa, Ohio—a historic free Black settlement that played a vital role in the Underground Railroad.

“The Underground Railroad is a key part of Ohio’s history, and this trail allows us to bring that history to life,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “This trail serves as both a visual and educational experience, connecting visitors to the challenges and triumphs faced by freedom seekers in Ohio’s natural landscape.”

Along the trail, visitors will discover how freedom seekers navigated their journey, using the stars to find their way and foraging for food in the wilderness. The trail is designed for all ages, offering an engaging and educational experience for families, school groups, and history enthusiasts alike.

The Alum Creek trail is the first of four planned Heritage of Freedom Trails across Ohio. Future trails are set to open at East Fork and Portage Lakes state parks, with a fourth location still to be determined. These trails aim to deepen public understanding of Ohio’s role in the Underground Railroad, with community members, educators, and historians working together to ensure the stories are told accurately and respectfully.

“We’re proud to partner with local leaders and organizations like the Westerville Historical Society to bring this important project to life,” said Mayor Kenneth Wright of Westerville. James Prysock, president of WeRise for Greater Westerville, also played a key role in supporting the trail’s development.

The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft, which oversees Ohio’s 76 state parks and waterways, is dedicated to providing exceptional outdoor recreation while conserving the state’s natural resources. In 2024, ODNR celebrates 75 years of stewardship, education, and outdoor opportunities for Ohioans.
