LANCASTER, OH – The Lancaster Police Department is recognizing one of its own for going above and beyond the call of duty. Officer Smart was recently commended for her compassion, professionalism, and service to the community after taking it upon herself to help a family in need during a recent welfare check.
According to a letter of commendation submitted by Sgt. A. Dilley, Officer Smart responded to a wellbeing check on October 18, 2025, where she encountered a single mother and her children struggling with basic needs. Acting on her own initiative, she purchased food for the family from Little Caesars—an act Sgt. Dilley described as one of many quiet gestures of kindness Officer Smart performs without seeking recognition.
“Her humility, compassion, and dedication reflect great credit upon herself and the department,” Sgt. Dilley wrote. “Officer Smart is a true team player who consistently assists her coworkers, volunteers for overtime, and demonstrates integrity and self-awareness in every aspect of her service.”

Sgt. Dilley also noted that Officer Smart’s professionalism extends beyond her daily duties, highlighting her participation in the Columbus Marathon as one of only three Lancaster officers to take part.
Lancaster Police Chief Snyder praised the commendation, calling it “another outstanding example of the caliber of officers serving our community.”
Officer Smart’s dedication, empathy, and professionalism continue to embody the values of the Lancaster Police Department, setting a strong example for her peers and the community she serves.
