Human Remains Discovered in Hocking River, Athens County Sheriff’s Office Investigating

Athens County, OH – On Saturday, June 1, 2024, at approximately 7:18 PM, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office received a report of possible human remains found in the Hocking River. A group of kayakers discovered the remains and led deputies to the location off River Road in Guysville. Deputies arrived and confirmed the remains were human.

A comprehensive search of the surrounding area was conducted by the responding units, but no additional evidence was found. The remains were recovered with assistance from the Richland Area Fire Department and the Rome Township Fire Department.

Sheriff Smith provided limited details about the case, stating, “The remains were determined to be that of an adult male wearing blue jeans, a brown belt, and brown boots. The specific description of the decedent does not correspond with any active cases or recently reported missing persons.”

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Athens County Coroner’s Office, is working diligently to identify the deceased.
