WASHINGTON, May 1, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a recall of approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products by Cargill Meat Solutions, a Hazleton, Pa., establishment, due to potential contamination with E. coli O157:H7.
The recalled raw ground beef items, produced on April 26-27, 2024, include various plastic-wrapped trays containing “93% LEAN 7% FAT ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF,” “PRIME RIB BEEF STEAK BURGERS PATTIES,” “85% LEAN 15% FAT ALL NATURAL ANGUS PREMIUM GROUND BEEF,” “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK,” “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK PATTIES,” and “90% LEAN 10% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF SIRLOIN PATTIES.” These products bear the USDA mark of inspection and establishment number “EST. 86P” on the label and were distributed to Walmart retail locations nationwide.
The recall was initiated following the discovery that previously segregated product had been inadvertently used in the production of ground beef. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions associated with the consumption of these products. However, consumers are advised to discard the recalled items or return them to the place of purchase.
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause symptoms such as dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps within 2-8 days of exposure. While most individuals recover within a week, some may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure more common in young children and older adults. Those experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
FSIS urges consumers to cook all raw meat products, including ground beef, to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure safety. A food thermometer is recommended to verify proper cooking temperatures.
