COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tech giant Google announced a $10 million funding initiative Thursday aimed at enhancing community water sources, public infrastructure, and watershed management across Ohio [cite: Google Announces $10M in Funding to Advance Water Stewardship in Ohio; Commits Initial $3M to Ohio Department of Agriculture, Columbus, OH – August 20, 2026 – Today, Google announced $10 million in funding to support community water sources, infrastructure and access across Ohio.].
The multi-million-dollar commitment comes as part of Google’s broader strategy to manage natural resources responsibly in communities housing its data center operations.
$3 Million Initial Grant for Agricultural Runoff
As the first step in the initiative, Google is directing an initial $3 million grant to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s H2Ohio Farmland Water Management Program.
The funds will help optimize farmland drainage structures across the state, working to:
- Reduce Agricultural Runoff: Preventing excess nutrient and chemical runoff into local waterways and rivers [cite: The first project to receive funding will be a $3 million grant to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s H2Ohio Farmland Water Management Program, which optimizes drainage structures to reduce agricultural runoff and conserve water.].
- Improve Crop Availability: Conserving groundwater to ensure water remains available for crops during dry spells.
- Enhance Overall Water Quality: Supporting healthier aquatic ecosystems and downstream public water systems [cite: “Water is a vital resource, playing a crucial role in transportation, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and, most importantly, healthy ecosystems & communities., This initiative will help improve water quality and make water more readily available for crops during dry periods.].
“Water is a vital resource, playing a crucial role in transportation, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and, most importantly, healthy ecosystems & communities,” said Ben Townsend, Global Head of Infrastructure Strategy & Sustainability at Google. “As data centers evolve to support our growing digital world, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to protect community water resources while investing in watersheds and public water infrastructure…”
Global Stewardship Goals
The new funding expands upon Google’s ongoing environmental initiatives in Ohio, which include local wetland restoration and floodplain rehabilitation.
Globally, the company has set an ambitious corporate goal to replenish more freshwater than its data centers and offices consume by 2030. Google reports it has committed more than $500 million to water, wastewater, and reuse infrastructure worldwide, maintaining 165 active water stewardship projects spanning 97 watersheds [cite: Around the world, Google has committed over $500 million to the development of water, wastewater, and water reuse infrastructure and to the utility partners that deliver water in the communities where Google builds and operates data centers., Globally, Google has 165 water stewardship projects across 97 watersheds.].
