BOWIE, MD — Thrill-seekers in the Mid-Atlantic will have one last season to ride the coasters, slide the flumes, and savor funnel cake memories at Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor, as the parks are set to permanently close after the 2025 operating season, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced Thursday.
The decision is part of a broader “portfolio optimization program” being implemented by the amusement park giant, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The approximately 500-acre property in Bowie, Maryland, will be put up for sale and marketed for redevelopment. Leading global real estate firm CBRE has been tapped to manage the sale.
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Richard A. Zimmerman, President and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment.”

Zimmerman acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision. “This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our park associates and loyal guests,” he said. “We are grateful to our park team who work tirelessly to create unforgettable experiences. This final season will be a celebration of the fun and memories made here over the decades.”
Approximately 70 full-time employees will be affected by the closure. Six Flags stated that severance packages and other support will be provided to eligible employees as part of the transition.
The final day of operation for Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will be Sunday, November 2, 2025. The company confirmed that the closure is not expected to have a material financial impact on its 2025 earnings.
Guests who have already purchased 2025 season passes or individual tickets will still be able to use them during the park’s final season. Information about the operating calendar and special closing events can be found on the Six Flags America website.
Once billed as a key regional attraction with iconic rides and family-friendly entertainment, Six Flags America has been a staple for summer fun since its opening. The closing will mark the end of a vibrant chapter in Maryland’s theme park history.
