CHILLICOTHE, OH — Judge Tony L. Eddy, the first woman ever elected to serve as a judge in Ross County, officially retired on November 20, 2024, bringing an end to a distinguished career in public service that spanned over two decades.
Judge Eddy began her tenure as Municipal Court Judge in 2012, and throughout her years of service, she became a respected figure in the Chillicothe and Ross County communities. Prior to her time on the bench, Judge Eddy practiced law and served as the Law Director for the City of Chillicothe, further cementing her commitment to public service.
In recognition of her contributions, the Ross County Board of Commissioners honored Judge Eddy with an official proclamation. The proclamation, signed by Commissioners Jack Everson, James Lowe, and Dwight Garrett, praised Judge Eddy’s “dedication and commitment to the residents of Ross County,” noting her strong sense of justice, fairness, and respect for all parties in the courtroom. The Commissioners also commended her efforts to ensure the overall welfare, safety, and security of the citizens of Chillicothe and Ross County.
The proclamation declared November 30, 2024, as a day to honor Judge Eddy and celebrate her many years of service. Friends, colleagues, and community leaders gathered to express their gratitude and admiration for her dedication. Beyond her judicial duties, Judge Eddy has been deeply involved in the community, volunteering and providing philanthropic support to numerous local organizations and boards.
David Glass, Commissioner-Elect and Chairman of the Ross County Republican Party, also offered his recognition, saying, “Judge Toni Eddy has been incomparable in her dedication to Ross County. She has consistently demonstrated fairness, justice, and professionalism throughout her years of service. Thanks to her and her colleagues, this community continues to be one where citizens expect fairness in the courtroom.”
Glass added, “She leaves big shoes to fill, but Ross County has excellent, dedicated professionals ready to step up and serve as she has.”
Following Judge Eddy’s retirement, the work of the Chillicothe Municipal Court continues. An interim judge has been appointed to manage the court’s docket until a permanent replacement is selected. Governor Mike DeWine, who has the authority to appoint municipal judges in the event of a vacancy, will make the final appointment.
The Ross County Republican Party has already begun the process of reviewing potential candidates to fill the vacancy. After conducting outreach to a wide range of legal professionals, including former judges, the party has compiled a list of qualified candidates to be considered by the Governor’s office. Those interested in applying for the position can contact Governor Mike DeWine’s office to submit their applications, which will include background checks, resumes, and participation in a thorough interview process.
Governor DeWine is expected to announce his appointment for the Chillicothe Municipal Court judge position in the coming months.
