ATLANTA, Ga. — Coca-Cola announced Tuesday that it will launch a new version of its flagship beverage made with real cane sugar in the United States this fall. The move comes amid renewed calls for cleaner food ingredients, including public pressure from former President Donald Trump.
According to a company press release, the product—crafted with U.S.-sourced cane sugar—is part of Coca-Cola’s broader innovation agenda aimed at offering consumers more choices across various preferences and occasions. The new beverage will join the company’s existing Coca-Cola Trademark product line.
“In the United States, we plan to introduce a new offering made with U.S. cane sugar this fall to complement our strong core portfolio,” the company stated.
The announcement followed comments by former President Trump, who claimed credit for the shift on his social media platform Truth Social.
“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote. “This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
Coca-Cola had originally switched from cane sugar to high-fructose corn syrup in the 1980s, citing the high tariffs on imported sugar and the cost-effectiveness of corn syrup, which benefited from federal agricultural subsidies.
The upcoming product is expected to appeal to consumers seeking a return to what some describe as a more “authentic” taste, as well as those concerned about processed sweeteners.
