CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Chillicothe’s long-awaited mural project has reached completion, marking the first initiative in the city’s Alley Beautification series. The new mural, located in the alley between High Five Cakes and Lievita, features a vibrant cartoon-style depiction of Bennett Hall, local hills, canal boats, and Ohio University’s mascot, Rufus the Bobcat. This eye-catching artwork is designed to encourage community engagement and provide a fun backdrop for selfies.

The mural project was a collaborative effort, with Square Ghost Creative handling the installation and Ohio University Chillicothe contributing to the project as a partner. This mural is part of Ohio University Chillicothe’s broader initiative to increase interaction with the local community.

In addition to the mural, Downtown Chillicothe, Inc. has announced plans for two new digital kiosks, following a December 2023 discussion with the Design Review Board (DRB). These kiosks are set to enhance the downtown area by guiding visitors to local businesses and institutions. The $50,000 grant from T-Mobile will fund a two-sided, seven-foot black module with interactive screens to be placed in front of the courthouse.

Further funding from the Herrnstein Family Fund and proceeds from the “Sand in the Streets” downtown volleyball games will support a single-sided kiosk near the public parking lot on East Water Street, close to the entrance of Yoctangee Park. These kiosks will feature directories, wayfinding systems, event information, and advertisements.

Tiffany Baldwin, Program Manager for Downtown Chillicothe, Inc., noted that the kiosks are expected to be installed in the spring, once weather conditions are suitable. The initiative aims to improve navigation and provide valuable information to residents and visitors alike.
