WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representatives Mike Carey (R-Ohio-15) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D. (R-Iowa-01) have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at extending key tax incentives for the biofuels industry—supporting farmers, energy producers, and advancing U.S. energy independence.
The bill would renew and extend vital tax credits for biodiesel and second-generation biofuels. These credits are designed to promote cleaner, domestically produced energy and give market certainty to producers across the nation.
“Biodiesel is a homegrown resource that can support our long-term energy independence and support farmers, producers, and energy workers right here in Ohio,” said Rep. Carey, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. “With America’s energy dominance at stake, we’re working to strengthen our supply of biodiesel for years to come.”
Rep. Miller-Meeks emphasized the importance of Iowa’s role in the renewable energy landscape. “Iowa’s biofuels production fuels America and powers our economy,” she said. “This commonsense bill will lower energy costs and emissions, and promote the production of biofuels to further President Trump’s America First agenda for energy dominance.”
About the Credits
Biodiesel, made from soybean oil, recycled cooking oil, and animal fats, emits significantly fewer pollutants than traditional diesel fuel and is nontoxic and biodegradable. In Ohio, biodiesel production supports over 1,500 jobs and generates more than $806 million in economic output annually. The state is home to two biodiesel refineries that rely heavily on Ohio-grown soybeans.
The legislation also includes an extension of the Second-Generation Biofuel Producer Tax Credit, which offers up to $1.01 per gallon for advanced fuels like cellulosic ethanol. These credits have driven innovation in renewable fuel technology.
Industry Support
The bill has already garnered widespread support from major industry and advocacy groups, including:
- American Trucking Associations (ATA)
- Clean Freight Coalition
- Energy Marketers of America (EMA)
- Illinois Soy Association
- National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS)
- National Energy & Fuels Institute (NEFI)
- Renewable Fuels Association (RFA)
- SIGMA: America’s Leading Fuel Marketers
- Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), and more.
If passed, the legislation would ensure continued growth of the U.S. biofuels sector and help secure a more sustainable and economically resilient energy future.
