HAMPSHIRE, England — Master gardener Ian Paton has rewritten the record books once again, cultivating a colossal 2,856.8-pound Atlantic Giant pumpkin to claim the world record for the largest fruit of any plant species ever grown.

Weighing roughly the same as a female hippopotamus, the massive 1,295.8-kilogram specimen officially caps off Paton’s first season competing without his twin brother and long-time growing partner, Stuart. Paton, 65, spent up to six hours every single day tending to the plant to achieve the historic milestone.

The Science Behind a 2,850-Pound Beast

To understand the sheer magnitude of Paton’s agricultural feat requires a look at the biology powering giant pumpkin cultivation:

  • A 100-Day Sprint: The entire process takes roughly 150 to 160 days from seed to scale. However, the period from hand-pollinated flower to final harvest weight spans just 100 days.
  • Insane Daily Growth: Gaining over 2,850 pounds in 100 days translates to an average growth rate of 28.5 pounds per day. Because growth follows a bell curve, peak development days can see the fruit gain upwards of 60 pounds in a single 24-hour period.
  • Extreme Fluid Intake: Water fuels this massive expansion. At its peak, the fruit absorbs roughly 8 gallons of liquid per day. By comparison, most fruit species on earth could fit inside an 8-gallon bucket multiple times over—yet this single Atlantic Giant drinks that entire volume daily.

1,000 Square Feet of Solar Collectors

To feed a single, massive sink of this scale, the plant relies on a massive infrastructure. Paton’s growing system spans over 1,000 square feet—a 33-by-33-foot canopy of leaves acting as living solar collectors to pump sugar directly into the fruit.

Between 500 and 750 individual leaves, each measuring up to 2 square feet, work in tandem to capture sunlight. At every node where a leaf reaches up, an adventitious root grows downward into the soil, creating hundreds of distinct root networks for a single plant.

Competitive growers hand-bury each of these leaf node junctions with compost, topsoil, biologicals, and specialized growth stimulants, essentially spoon-feeding each root system to maximize weight gain.

“3,000 Pounds or Bust”

Paton, who now holds the record for growing the three heaviest pumpkins in history, called his young granddaughters immediately after the weigh-in to share the win.

With the 2,850-pound mark officially shattered, giant pumpkin growers around the globe are already looking toward the sport’s next legendary threshold: 3,000 pounds. Given the unlimited genetic ceiling of the Atlantic Giant, growers believe that benchmark is well within reach.
