Athens – A man is in custody after fleeing from law enforcement

On December 30, 2023, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding the whereabouts of John Wayne Perry II, age 38. Law enforcement had been attempting to locate Perry pursuant to multiple warrants issued for Escape (F3), Vandalism of Government Property (F5), Possession of Controlled Substances (F5), and Failure to Appear.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit located Perry traveling in a vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Bodin Road, New Marshfield. The vehicle failed to comply and fled toward Beckler Road. Additional units were standing by at the Pedigo Ridge Road and Grass Run Road intersection and continued the pursuit. Perry lost control and bailed out of the moving vehicle into the woods as the vehicle continued over an embankment. Sheriff Smith advised “K-9 Cody was deployed for an area search and found Perry hiding in the brush where he was taken into custody.” After being cleared at Obleness Memorial Hospital he was transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Additional felony charges are pending as a result of the incident. Sheriff Smith would like to thank Deputies of the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, the Waterloo Fire Department, Athens County EMS, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their assistance in this case.
