Chillicothe and the Scioto Valley — The Chillicothe Garden Club has a full schedule planned through the end of the year, starting with a “bring and take” in their meeting on Monday.

I spoke with member Priscilla Steele at the club’s last gathering in a Pickaway County winery.

She described each month’s event, where they variously visit a new location, learn about some aspect of gardening or horticulture, review the season, and more. (They might even gain a new plant.) The group usually start their meetings at 1pm on third Mondays at various places, though they have a few recurring locations.

Steele said that on September 16th, the Chillicothe Garden Club will meet in the Ross County Service Center at 475 Western Avenue. They will have their annual give-and-take, where members will set out houseplants, perennials, bulbs, magazines, books, and more – whatever they are ready to part with – and pick up new treasures.

Their speaker will explain what the Chillicothe Tree Commission is doing and why trees are important in gardens and towns.

Steele says in October the group will be going to Pike County to tour the OSU County Extension farm.

In November, gardening proponent Jen Slone of the Chillicothe & Ross County Public Library will speak on “what every garden should have.”

And, in December, the garden club will gather at Adena Mansion & Gardens to learn about period decorations made from what they have on the grounds.

The club does not have an internet presence, so you can call Steele for information at 740 / 656-9439.
