COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 27-year-old man was killed Tuesday evening in a West Columbus shooting, sparking a multi-agency highway pursuit that ended in a crash and the arrest of a murder suspect.
Columbus Division of Police officers responded around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, to reports of gunfire on the first block of North Burgess Avenue, near West Broad Street.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim, identified as 27-year-old Ryan Ward, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported Ward in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators quickly identified 22-year-old David Estrada as the primary suspect in the shooting and reported that he fled the scene in a silver Honda.
Officers subsequently located Estrada’s vehicle, initiating a chase that stretched into Fairfield County. The pursuit came to an end when Estrada crashed on U.S. Route 33 near the village of Sugar Grove.
Deputies with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted Columbus police in taking Estrada into custody at the crash site.
Estrada was booked into the Franklin County Jail on a charge of murder. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court Thursday morning. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
