COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fall foliage season is hitting its stride in Southeast Ohio, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is inviting residents and travelers to celebrate both the changing leaves and the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial. Two popular family-friendly events are slated for the weekend of October 24–25, 2026, offering guided tours, educational exhibits, and outdoor recreation in the heart of the Hocking Hills.
“There’s nothing quite like fall in the Hocking Hills, and these events are a great way to experience the season,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Whether you’re taking in the views, exploring the trails, or talking with our natural resource experts, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.”
Hocking State Forest Fall Color Tour
- When: Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Where: Hocking State Forest Headquarters, 19275 State Route 374, Rockbridge, OH 43149
Kicking off on Saturday, the annual forest tour centers around the historic cabin located directly across from the state forest headquarters. Visitors can enjoy wagon rides through the vibrant autumn canopy, alongside hands-on demonstrations covering chainsaw safety, firewood processing, and wildfire-fighting equipment.
Professional foresters will also be on-site to lead tree identification tips, forest and wildlife management discussions, and tree trivia. For hikers looking to extend their trek, the Rim Trail connecting to nearby Conkles Hollow is accessible right by the historic cabin. Parking is available on-site at the forest headquarters, with all activities within easy walking distance.
Conkles Hollow Fall Open House

Running across both Saturday and Sunday, the Conkles Hollow Fall Open House showcases some of the most dramatic autumn scenery in the region. Guests can take in sweeping vistas from the 2.5-mile loop Rim Trail or enjoy an accessible, close-up look at rugged sandstone cliffs along the 1-mile paved Lower Gorge Trail.
Naturalists will be stationed along both paths to discuss local geology, natural history, and regional flora and fauna. History enthusiasts can also check out educational exhibits and local historical reenactors demonstrating 1790s Ohio frontier life.
- Visitor Note: On-site parking, a picnic area, and portable restrooms are available at Conkles Hollow. Because it is a protected state nature preserve, pets are not permitted beyond the parking lot.
