CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Pickaway County property owners have been given an extra week to pay their second-half property taxes after a delay in the mailing of tax bills.
The Pickaway County Treasurer’s Office announced that the payment deadline has been extended from Aug. 21 to Aug. 28 to allow residents additional time after bills were mailed later than expected.
According to Pickaway County Treasurer John Howley, the delay was caused by the implementation of changes required under property tax legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly late last year.
“Implementing the changes associated with legislation passed toward the end of last year turned out to be more complicated than anticipated, leading to the bills going out much later than anyone would like,” Howley said. “We were unable to make a change to the billing file when we ran into the mailing delay, so they do have a date of August 21 listed, but we have extended the due date to the 28th.”
Despite the delay, Howley said there is positive news for most county homeowners.
“The good news is that nearly every homeowner in the county will see a reduction in their second-half bills,” he said. “This is indicated on the line that reads ‘Inflation Cap Credit.'”
The Inflation Cap Credit is expected to provide more than $5 million in total savings for Pickaway County property owners on their second-half tax bills.
Residents can view their tax bills and make payments online by visiting the Pickaway County Treasurer’s website at picktreasurer.org.
Additional property tax relief is expected next year as new state law increases the Owner-Occupancy Credit and provides an enhanced Homestead Credit for qualifying property owners.
“We’re excited the legislature is taking steps to lower the property tax burden on residents,” Howley said. “We will continue to work with our technology vendors to improve the processes for enacting these changes to minimize any confusion for the people of Pickaway County.”
The Pickaway County Treasurer’s Office is located at 110 Island Road in Circleville and is open weekdays from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents may also use the recently installed secure payment drop box for after-hours and weekend tax payments. The office can be reached at 740-474-2370.
