CHILLICOTHE, OH — In a major push to bolster rural healthcare, Adena Health has announced its largest-ever scholarship distribution, awarding $230,000 to 46 local high school students.

The funds, distributed through the Jack Berno Hope for Our Future scholarship program, are designed to support the next generation of healthcare professionals. This year’s recipients represent 20 different schools across Adena’s nine-county service region and are pursuing 14 different fields of study, ranging from nursing and medicine to hospital finance and marketing.

Building a Local Talent Pipeline

The initiative is more than just a financial gift; it is a strategic investment in the longevity of local medical care.

“Investing in our youth is essential to the future of rural health care,” said Kathi Edrington, Adena President and CEO. “We want these students to see a future here and consider one day bringing their talents back to the communities they call home.”

The scholarship program is unique in that it supports both clinical roles (like doctors and nurses) and non-clinical roles (such as engineering and finance) that are vital to running a modern healthcare system.

Community-Powered Growth

The record-breaking total was made possible through a collaborative fundraising effort. The Adena Volunteer Advisory Council contributed a staggering $100,000 this year, specifically to expand the program and increase the number of students receiving aid. Additional support came from the Adena Health Foundation, local physicians, and community donors.

“Our scholarships are an intentional investment,” said Laura Jo Hawk, Adena Health Foundation President. “They support students connected to our communities and mission while recognizing those who demonstrate a passion for serving others.”

The Class of 2026 includes a wide array of local standouts, including:

  • Unioto High School: Leading the pack with seven recipients, including students pursuing physical therapy, medicine, and nursing.

  • Zane Trace High School: Four recipients focusing on health education, imaging, and exercise physiology.
