CHILLICOTHE, OH — The streets of historic downtown Chillicothe are about to look a lot more like the Shire. On Saturday, June 20, fans of high fantasy and local commerce will gather for a massive Lord of the Rings–inspired festival designed to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary world to life.
Running from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, the immersive, family-friendly event will turn local storefronts into stops on an epic quest, offering themed specials, activities, and a “walkable adventure” through the heart of the city.
A Growing Fellowship
The upcoming festival looks to shatter records set during a similar event in November 2024, which drew more than 200 people to the downtown area. Organizers say the high turnout proved that Chillicothe has a strong appetite for “experience-driven” community gatherings.
“When we hosted this in 2024, we saw people coming downtown to explore and enjoy something truly different,” said Angel Altman, owner of Tea of Life Apothecary & SA Integrated Health and one of the event’s key organizers. “Events like this remind us of what really matters: community and loyalty. There’s no better symbol of that than the works of Tolkien.”
What to Expect on the Journey
The day is designed as a “come-and-go” experience, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. Highlights include:
- Themed Specials: Participating downtown shops and restaurants will offer “Middle-earth” inspired menus and products.
- Costumes Encouraged: While not required, attendees are invited to dress as their favorite hobbits, elves, wizards, or rangers.
- Strengthening Local Roots: Beyond the fun and games, the event aims to drive significant foot traffic to small businesses and foster deeper connections between residents.
Join the Quest
The event is free to attend and open to all ages. However, travelers are encouraged to “check in” before they set out. Those who pre-register online will be entered into drawings for various door prizes and giveaways. Pre-registration also helps local businesses better prepare for the “horde” of fans expected to descend on the city.
“It’s about experiencing Chillicothe through a fresh and engaging lens,” Altman added. “Especially in today’s climate, we need these opportunities to share creativity and community spirit.”
