Amanda, Ohio- March 22nd – 25th, A-C FFA members; Catherine Buckley, Grace Martin, Emma Strickler, and Riley Strickler all attended the NAEE (National Association of Agricultural Educators) National Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C. to promote and advocate for agricultural education and both the Ohio and National FFA Organization.

This trip to our nation’s capitol was a rather important one. These four members were all able to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that was memorable, as well as educational for both them and all those whom they visited.

At the start of the trip, members spent a lot of time visiting with both of our Ohio senators, Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno. During these meetings, our members talked over the opportunities FFA offers and all of the events that our chapter has participated in.

In addition, our attendees visited multiple United States House Representatives; Troy Balderson, Shontel M. Brown, Mike Carey, Warren Davidson, and Max L. Miller. Our members were able to educate all of these individuals about the achievements of our FFA chapter in past years and the plans that we have for the future.

These members also met with Josie Montoney, who works in the House of Representatives Agricultural Committee Office. During this visit, these attendees got details of current events affecting agriculture today such as the Farm Bill and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

At the end of the trip, these members had the chance to attend and observe a Senate session, allowing them to learn directly how they work. “Being able to see how the Senate sessions worked firsthand was so cool and helped me understand it better!” said Martin.

Our attendees also visited the National Botanic Gardens in some of their free time in between meetings. This was such a surreal and unique experience for our members!

Overall, these four members had an incredible experience on this trip! It is inspiring to know that four high school aged students from Amanda-Clearcreek had a direct impact on federal law and were involved in conversations that impact agricultural policy.

Our chapter hopes to continue this valuable opportunity for future members!
