CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (April 10, 2026) — Ohio University Chillicothe, with support from its Education Advisory Committee, will host a professional development event for educators titled “Foundations to Futures: Building the Workforce from the Ground Up” on Tuesday, May 5, from 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The program is designed for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade educators and will be held primarily in Bennett Hall on the Ohio University Chillicothe campus. Organizers say the day will focus on helping teachers strengthen workforce-based learning strategies while building stronger connections between education and local industry.

Participants will take part in breakout sessions led by regional educators, along with optional tours of Kenworth Truck Company and Centrus Energy Corp., giving attendees a closer look at career pathways and advanced manufacturing and energy-sector operations in Ohio.

Associate Professor of Instruction Karen Corcoran said the university is eager to welcome educators back to campus for a day centered on collaboration and innovation in teaching.

“Educators will have the opportunity to learn, connect and prepare to build a future-ready workforce,” Corcoran said.

This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Mike Nicholson, a 30-year education professional and founder of Learning InspirED. His presentation, titled “A Counter-Intuitive Move for our Time: Giving Students More Control over their Educational Lives,” will focus on student-led learning and reshaping traditional classroom structures.

Nicholson has worked across the education landscape as a teacher, school leader, district innovator, superintendent, university researcher and consultant. He currently works with school systems across the country, helping districts design strategies that support personalized learning and student empowerment.

Interim Dean of Campus and Community Relations Mike Lafreniere said the program reflects the university’s continued commitment to serving as a community partner.

“Investing in the professional growth of our teachers is one of the most meaningful things we can do as a community anchor institution,” Lafreniere said. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our Education Program Advisory Committee, Ohio University Chillicothe is able to bring this experience to educators for a second year.”

Educators who attend will earn eight contact hours for participation. Those hours cannot be applied toward Ohio University degree requirements.

Registration details and additional information are available through the Ohio University Chillicothe website.
