MT. STERLING, OH — As the summer season approaches, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Huntington District is opening the doors—and the depths—of the Deer Creek Lake Dam to the public for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at one of Central Ohio’s most vital infrastructure projects.
Similar to the popular tours held at Alum Creek, these free, guided sessions offer a rare glimpse into the mechanics of flood control and water management. Led by expert USACE personnel, the tours are designed to answer the community’s biggest questions: How does a dam actually work? Why does the lake level change between summer and winter? And what happens during a heavy rain emergency?
The “Deep Dive”: 176 Steps and 7 Floors
The highlight of the experience is an immersive walk through the dam’s massive control tower. Participants will descend seven stories to the very bottom of the structure. On the way back up, the tour stops at every level, allowing visitors to see the inner workings of the facility firsthand.
For those counting, the climb totals 176 steps. However, the Army Corps emphasizes that the tour is designed for everyone.
“The tour is family-friendly and accessible for all ages and abilities,” the USACE noted. “An elevator is available for those who prefer not to take the stairs, ensuring everyone can enjoy the view from the top.”
Know Before You Go
Tours typically last between 45 and 60 minutes and are currently available by appointment. Due to federal security protocols, visitors are reminded that no large bags, purses, or backpacks are permitted inside the facility.
