COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Ohio’s high school seniors are getting a historic addition to their graduation caps and gowns.

Governor Mike DeWine and Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin announced today that members of the Class of 2026 can now earn a special America 250-Ohio Citizenship Seal for their diplomas. The commemorative design honors the semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“The Class of 2026 has the unique honor of graduating during this historic year,” Governor DeWine said. “Ohio has played a pivotal role in the story of America, from our presidents to our pioneers. I hope this seal inspires students to learn about our past and recognize their own role in shaping our future.”

A Badge of Civic Excellence

The Citizenship Seal is one of 12 specialized seals available under Ohio’s graduation requirements. To graduate, students must earn at least two. The Citizenship version specifically rewards students who demonstrate a deep understanding of American history and government through:

  • State-level testing or Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
  • College Credit Plus or International Baccalaureate coursework.
  • Dedicated civics and history classes.

Director Stephen D. Dackin noted that the new design is more than just a decoration. “This seal reflects the commitment in our schools to prepare the next generation of young adults to be civically engaged and mindful of our nation’s story,” he said.

No Cost to Schools

To ensure every qualifying student can participate, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce is providing the physical seals to schools at no cost. School administrators can begin ordering the America 250-Ohio designs immediately through a survey on the Department’s website.

Part of a National Celebration

The initiative is a collaboration between the state and the America 250-Ohio Commission, which is tasked with coordinating celebrations across all 88 Ohio counties.

“Commencement is a significant milestone,” said Todd Kleismit, executive director of the commission. “We are proud to celebrate the Class of 2026 with a fitting tribute through this commemorative seal.”

As 2026 approaches, Ohio joins a nationwide effort created by Congress to highlight the people and moments that have shaped the American experience over the last two and a half centuries. For Ohio’s graduating seniors, that history will now be a permanent part of their academic legacy.
