COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three Ohio airmen killed in a refueling crash in Iraq during Operation Epic Fury will return home this weekend, as their remains are brought back to Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base.

The fallen service members — Tyler Simmons, Curtis Angst, and Seth Koval — were assigned to the 121st Air Refueling Wing based at Rickenbacker.

According to officials, the airmen lost their lives during a refueling operation overseas earlier this month. Their return on Sunday, March 29, marks the final journey home to Ohio and their families.

Following their arrival, the remains will be transported to funeral homes, where loved ones will have the opportunity to pay their respects.

In a statement, the Ohio National Guard emphasized that the dignified transfer at Rickenbacker will be a private and solemn event focused on the families of the fallen.

“This event is specifically focused on the families and loved ones of our fallen Airmen. It is the final journey of our service members back to Ohio and to their families,” the statement read.

Officials also noted that, in accordance with Department of Defense and Air Force policies, media coverage of the return of fallen service members is not permitted. As a result, the event will not be open to the public or press, and no interviews or access will be granted.

The loss of the three airmen has been felt deeply across Ohio, particularly within the military community, as preparations are made to honor their service and sacrifice in the days ahead.
