CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A high-ranking former law enforcement official is facing significant prison time after a Ross County jury returned a string of guilty verdicts in a major public corruption case.

Caleb Moritz, the former Chief Deputy of the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office, was convicted Wednesday on seven felony counts following a trial that exposed a pattern of misconduct involving confidential informants, stolen department property, and witness intimidation.

The Charges: Drugs, Theft, and Intimidation

The jury’s decision followed an investigation that began after numerous complaints were filed regarding Moritz’s conduct while employed at the Sheriff’s Office. According to Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, the charges against Moritz include:

  • Corrupting Another with Drugs (F-2): The most serious charge, involving his interactions with informants.
  • Intimidation (F-3): Two counts of intimidating an attorney, victim, or witness.
  • Unlawful Transaction in Weapons (F-3): Related to a firearm stolen from the department.
  • Theft (F-4): Two counts involving property stolen upon his resignation.
  • Forgery (F-5): One count.

The Investigation: From Hocking to Ross County

The Hocking County Prosecutor’s Office originally sparked the probe after Moritz resigned in April 2023. Investigation revealed that upon his departure, Moritz stole a firearm and other department property.

While the crimes allegedly occurred in Hocking County, both the defense and prosecution requested a change of venue. The case was moved to Ross County Common Pleas Court to ensure a fair trial, where AG Yost’s Special Prosecutions Section took the lead.

Sentencing Slated for May

Attorney General Dave Yost praised the verdict, emphasizing that no one is above the law—especially those sworn to uphold it. Moritz is currently scheduled for sentencing on May 1, 2026.
