PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — A quick-thinking report by a vigilant observer at a Teays Valley bus stop helped law enforcement prevent a potential threat to local students.

On February 13, 2026, an individual noticed suspicious behavior at one of their assigned bus stops: an unknown male was present, holding what appeared to be a Valentine’s Day gift. The observer promptly notified the school’s Resource Officer, triggering a coordinated investigation.

Authorities discovered that the man had made contact online with a juvenile in the district, as well as another student from Teays Valley. On February 23, the FBI executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in Indiana, confirming his connection to the reported behavior.

Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey praised the alert citizen, saying their attentiveness “most likely prevented a potentially tragic situation for the student and her family.” He added that the report reflected credit not only on the individual, but also on their family and the Teays Valley School District.

Sheriff Hafey emphasized the importance of community vigilance, noting that in law enforcement, the mantra “See something, say something” can save lives when acted upon.
