CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Ohio motorists are waking up to a harsh reality at the pump this week as the ripples of Middle East conflict reach the Buckeye State. While the national average has climbed to $3.68, Ohioans are seeing some of the sharpest month-over-month increases in the country, with prices in Southern Ohio and Pickaway County following a volatile upward trend.

According to latest data, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Ohio currently sits at $3.40, a staggering jump from the $2.77 average seen just one month ago.

Local Impact: Southern Ohio and Pickaway County

While the statewide average offers a bird’s-eye view, drivers in Southern Ohio are feeling the pinch differently depending on their commute.

  • Southern Ohio Average: Prices across the southern region are averaging approximately $3.45 per gallon, with cities like Cincinnati and Dayton seeing slightly higher fluctuations due to regional demand.
  • Pickaway County Watch: For those looking to save a few cents in the Circleville area, the hunt for the “cheap” sign is on. As of today, the cheapest gas in Pickaway County can be found at select stations like Sunoco in Leistville, and UDF in Circleville.

Why Prices are Skyrocketing

The primary driver behind the surge is the ongoing geopolitical instability. Following U.S. strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island export facility, the market has been on edge regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery that carries roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day.

“Until we see a meaningful resumption of oil flows through the Strait, upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Adding to the “double headwind” for Ohioans is the seasonal transition. Refineries are currently switching to summer-blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce but required by environmental regulations as temperatures rise.

By the Numbers: Fuel in the Buckeye State

Fuel TypeOhio Average1 Month Ago1 Year Ago
Regular$3.40$2.77$2.91
Diesel$4.88$3.65$3.52

Diesel users are facing even grimmer prospects. With the state average for diesel hitting $4.88, it is nearing the psychological $5.00 barrier, threatening to drive up the cost of goods and shipping for Ohio businesses.

Looking Ahead

While WTI Crude saw a slight dip in early Monday trading to $95.64 per barrel, it remains significantly higher than the $72 level seen just a week ago. For Ohio families planning spring break trips or daily commutes, the “path of least resistance” for prices remains upward for the foreseeable future.
