COLUMBUS — A well-known local photographer is now part of a historic addition to one of Ohio’s largest medical campuses.

Jeffrey Sunderland, a familiar name in Pickaway County’s arts community, has his photography featured inside the new 26-story University Hospital at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The 820-bed facility — the largest building project in Ohio State’s history — officially opens Sunday.

As part of its land-grant mission to serve the entire state, The Ohio State University incorporated photography representing all 88 Ohio counties throughout the hospital’s floors. Sunderland’s work is among nearly 600 images selected for display.

The artwork collection reflects Ohio’s diverse landscapes and communities, featuring farms, bicentennial barns, covered bridges, lakes, downtown murals, and more. Maternity care floors highlight baby animal photography, while each floor includes a map of Ohio identifying the counties represented and crediting the photographers. Plaques throughout the building also detail the university’s land-grant mission.

Over a five-month process, a selection committee reached out to approximately 100 photographers from across the state. At least 90% of those chosen have a direct Ohio connection, either through residence or frequent visits.

Sunderland’s work is well-known locally. His landscape photography has earned Best of Show honors at the Pickaway County Fair, and he has been recognized in Pickaway County Park District photo contests. His images have also appeared multiple times in the “Arts Around” calendar, showcasing regional artistic talent.

Now, his work will be seen by thousands of patients, visitors and staff members walking the halls of Ohio State’s newest hospital tower — bringing a piece of Pickaway County to the heart of Columbus.
