HUNTINGTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Firefighters with the Huntington Township Fire Department responded to an unusual and challenging rescue Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call reporting a horse trapped in a frozen swimming pool.

According to the department, the call came in at approximately 3:27 p.m. Crews initially paused in disbelief at the nature of the emergency but quickly confirmed the situation upon arrival. Firefighters found a horse standing in an ice-covered swimming pool, visibly stressed and unable to free itself.

Due to the icy conditions and the size of the animal, responders determined additional resources would be needed to safely complete the rescue. Fire department personnel contacted the Veterans Administration for specialized rescue equipment and coordinated with township trustees, local businesses, heavy equipment operators, and a wrecker service to secure a rotator and backhoe.

While resources were being assembled, crews carefully assessed multiple rescue options and worked to keep the horse calm. After stabilizing the animal, firefighters used a backhoe to carefully lift the horse out of the pool and place it onto solid ground.

Once removed, responders faced a second challenge. The horse had been exposed to icy water for more than an hour, causing its legs to stiffen. Firefighters and homeowners immediately began warming efforts, covering the horse with blankets, lighting a nearby fire, and using a space heater to raise its body temperature.

After approximately 10 to 15 minutes of active warming, crews encouraged the horse to stand by offering food. The animal was eventually able to get back on its feet and was walked to a nearby barn for shelter and continued warmth.

Officials said the horse did not appear to suffer any injuries and is expected to recover fully.

The Huntington Township Fire Department credited the successful rescue to strong cooperation among mutual aid partners, the Huntington Township Road Department, the Ross County Sheriff’s Office, and community members who assisted during the incident.

“This call is a reminder that emergency responders never know what situation they may face,” the department said, noting the teamwork and community support that made the rescue possible.
