CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Ross County Board of Commissioners has formally recognized longtime broadcaster Mike Smith for his decades of service to Southern Ohio, presenting him with a proclamation honoring his distinguished career and lasting impact on the community.
Smith began his career in radio broadcasting in 1979 and spent 37 years with WBEX/WKKJ, where he served as News and Sports Director and became the longtime “Voice of the Scioto Valley Conference.” His work helped shape local sports coverage and community news for generations of listeners across the region.
Following his tenure at WBEX/WKKJ, Smith continued serving Southern Ohio for an additional four years with Litter Media. During that time, he remained committed to sharing positive, informative stories that highlighted the people and events shaping local communities.
Over the course of his career, Smith received numerous professional honors, including being named Associated Press Ohio Newscaster of the Year and Sportscaster of the Year. He was also inducted into the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to high school athletics and sports broadcasting.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Smith has been deeply involved in community and faith-based service. He has taught Sunday School and mentored men in recovery, reflecting a lifelong commitment to serving others.
A lifelong resident of Frankfort, Smith and his wife, Laura, are the parents of their daughter, Sara.
In a statement shared through Litter Media, Smith expressed gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his approach to his work and service.
“Thanks for this unexpected honor,” Smith said. “Service to our community has been a blessing as I’ve always tried to remember what the Bible says: ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.’ Lord willing, I’ll still be around in the world of communication and hope to see you soon.”
The Ross County Board of Commissioners thanked Smith for his professionalism, dedication, and decades of service, and wished him and his family the best in a well-earned retirement.
