JACKSON COUNTY, OH — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has officially dedicated Baker Swamp in Jackson County as Ohio’s 150th State Nature Preserve, marking a major milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to protect its most treasured natural habitats.

The 181-acre property, donated by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), features a rare and ecologically rich wetland complex that supports diverse wildlife, including birds, amphibians, and several state-listed plant species.

“Today marks a milestone dedicating Ohio’s 150th State Nature Preserve,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “We have made it a priority to protect our natural resources, and this public-private partnership is a great example of how we can all work together to preserve Ohio’s beautiful lands.”

ODNR Director Mary Mertz highlighted the site’s unique ecological and geological value, noting that the swamp sits on land once part of an ancient river system that vanished about 200,000 years ago, likely due to glacial activity. “Baker Swamp has a fascinating history we must protect,” Mertz said. “This new preserve highlights a wetland habitat that is unique to the Appalachian region, and we’re proud to call this our newest state nature preserve.”

Baker Swamp is home to numerous species, including lance-leaved violet, running buffalo clover, and Virginia meadow-beauty, as well as native fish like the lake chubsucker.

“The Nature Conservancy has put a lot into collaboratively conserving and restoring this vital piece of land,” said Bill Stanley, TNC’s state director in Ohio. “Turning it over to the people of Ohio ensures its ongoing protection as part of the globally significant Appalachian landscape.”

TNC began restoration efforts in 2024, investing more than $546,000 to restore wetlands, reforest key areas, and repair natural stream channels. The project remains ongoing, with plans for additional public access improvements in the near future.

Located about 10 miles south of Jackson, Baker Swamp offers a half-mile loop trail and small parking area. Future plans include constructing an observation deck for wildlife viewing.
