Chillicothe — Explore the route of the Ohio & Erie Canal in town in the next walking tour by a local preservation group on Sunday afternoon.
The Chillicothe Restoration Foundation is hosting a new version of their tour of the state-owned artificial waterway that shaped adolescent Chillicothe starting in 1831. It will be 1 to 5 pm on June 22nd.
In the tour route, the canal occupied the north side of Water Street from Yoctangee Parkway to Mulberry Street, then paralleled Mulberry Street until angling southeast past Main Street and along Eastern Avenue.
Guides at nine stations between Walnut Street and Poland Park will provide additional interpretation – aside from an updated tour booklet of the entire canal in Chillicothe available for $7 (usually $10-15). Tour tickets will be $15 person or $20 for a family (2 adults and 2 children).

Two canal warehouses will open to tour takers: the proposed “Preservation Hall” at the corner of Main and Mulberry, and Dard Hunter Studios at 125 West Water Street.
Tickets can be purchased during the tour at the canal warehouse at Mulberry and Main. Presale tickets are available on Eventbrite. For more information, email [email protected].
(Find me at the end point, Poland Park, where I can regale you on the other canal in town. The privately built “Hydraulic Canal” branched off there and headed southwest, and attracted a certain paper mill in 1847.)
